Weight Gain - Is That Possible?

Most people associate mono with weight loss. After all, when you are feeling sick and tired all the time, you don't usually want to eat too much. While this is certainly true during the early stages of mono, what many people don't realize is how stationary they will be with their mono.

Along with trying to rest a great deal, most people don't exercise while they have mono. They've been told to take it easy and to make sure not to overexert themselves.

Weight Gain

The weight gain that some people might experience with mono will occur after the acute stage of the virus. After the acute stage, most people will regain most of their appetite.

At the same time, they may gain weight because they are being inactive, because they have an inflammation in the body, or because of hormonal changes that might be precipitated from their illness.

People may also feel bored after time and they may find themselves getting depressed. These emotions and feelings can often lead to overeating.

What To Do?

If you find yourself with weight gain, there are a number of things that you should consider. It is very important not to simply decide to start the latest fad diet.

Many of these diets aren't nutritionally sound, and they result in as much as 25% of the weight loss from water, bones, muscle and other lean tissues. For someone who has had mono, this is a risk that you can't afford to take!

Especially Dangerous After Mono

Someone who has had mononucleosis really needs to treat her body right. She needs enough calories and nutritious foods in order to help her body to continue fighting the virus and to get back to being healthy.

Many diets deprive the body of nutrients, vitamins and minerals, making it difficult to keep up your health and vitality. Diets often make people irritable and depressed as well, qualities that someone who has just recovered from mono doesn't need to experience!

Continuous dieting will also keep the body from the important nutrients it needs for cell efficiency and hormonal balance. People who diet a lot have an increased risk of diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease, all of which cause a lot of stress to an already-taxed body.

Solutions for Weight Gain?

There is no magic bullet that will take care of the weight you may have gained. The most important thing after mono is to focus on staying healthy and giving your body the nutrients that it needs.

By focusing on light exercise, nutritious foods and healthy living, you will probably find that the weight will follow. At this point, you should try to find out the underlying causes of your weight gain and work to counter these - eliminating them from your life and helping you to be stronger and healthier for the future.
